2021 NBA Draft: “My Guys”

Unlike most drafts, this draft has the opportunity to bring in the next era of the league. Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Jalen Suggs, you name it, this draft has a chance to be special in every sense of the word. With that being said, today I will be telling you guys some of “my guys” out of this draft. But without further or due let’s begin.

PG: Sharife Cooper | Auburn

If you follow me on Twitter (Which you should if you haven’t already @__wens__) you would’ve known who’s “my guy” at the 1 Guard slot. Sharife Cooper’s mix of brilliant playmaking ability and constant 110% effort on both offense and defense gives him the nod for me at this position.

SG: Jaden Springer | Tennessee

Now this position was a bit trickier for me to decide as my heart as a UConn fan wanted me to say James Bouknight, but my brain just wouldn’t allow it, so I elected to go with Jaden Springer. Jaden’s combination of NBA-ready on-ball defense and offensive potential as a self-creator gives him this spot without any remote competition.

SF: Ziaire Williams | Stanford

If you know me, you know how much I love my Wings, so much like deciding my Shooting Guard, deciding my Small Forward was just as tricky, but as it states above, I decided to go with the electric high flying scorer out of Stanford. Ziaire is a raw prospect in its definition, but to fully unlock his MASSIVE pool of potential he will need a staff dedicated to developing him and his physical tools. Ziaire’s season was faced with many unfortunate events from COVID to death in the family he never truly got a chance to get his feet situated in Stanford, California, but despite this all, he did show enough flashes for me to comfortably put him as my Small Forward.

PF: Jalen Johnson | Duke

Was there any doubt as to who my Power Forward is? Of course, it’s the former Dukie Jalen Johnson. At 6’9 220lbs Jalen is a terrific open floor creator, shows flashes of being an elite rim protector and a good scorer. Although Jalen does have his flaws for example his questionable commitment to the game, you can’t argue with the fact that he’s immensely talented and has the potential to become something truly special.

C: Alperen Sengun | Besiktas JK

Although Twitter and Reddit as a whole traditionally don’t watch the film on European prospects, it is bizarre how underrated and misunderstood Alp is. The MVP of the second strongest league outside the NBA in the world at just 18, Embiid likeability to draw fouls and get to the line, explosive vertically in the open floor, has shown the ability to make advanced passing reads, and although I don’t project him as a floor stretcher in the league, he has shown the ability to hit 3’s, yet Twitter decides to label him an “old school” or outdated player is beyond me. Alp may not ever be a star (he will be) but he will not bust in the league, BET ON IT!
