The uncertainty of the Quarterback position in this franchise continues to increase. According to The Athletic, Russell Wilson’s frustration has led his camp to broach trade destinations with the Seahawks. The report indicated 4 teams; Dolphins, Jets, Saints, and the Raiders. The second this hit Twitter, the jersey swaps and mock trades went viral. Everyone was on this and was surprised since Russell Wilson is Mr. Seattle. PFF posted a Mock Trade including the Jets trading DE Quinnen Williams, both first round picks this year (#2, #23), and lastly one of our two first rounders next year for QB Russell Wilson. This trade is absolutely atrocious for the Jets. I love Russell Wilson and think he is an ELITE QB, but your basically trading a franchise QB, two elite draft picks and Quinnen Williams who is turning a tide and looked incredible last year. However, we have options and let’s review and compare who the Jets should trade for:
Wilson Or Watson?:
Personally if you compare possibly trading for Watson or Wilson, I’d take Watson EVERYDAY of the WEEK! Watson is 25, contracted until 2026, he is just entering his prime and isn’t a win-now move. Trading for Wilson gives you an aging 32 year old QB, contracted until 2024, and is certainly a win-now move because he is aging. Another positive of trading for Watson is that, he’s only getting paid $15M this year. That allows you to be active this free agency period and sign players to front-loaded contracts. Wilson on the other hand is immediately paid $32M and will lower our cap space to just $35M. That could take us out of the bidding for certain big-time FA’s. Another factor is, that Wilson is aging and he knows it. He was also given a no-trade clause, and everyone knows we aren’t a team that will win a SB immediately and Russ is used to a winning team. I don’t know if he’d want to be traded to us. Now, you can say the same about Watson, but you’d be wrong. Watson is coming off of a 4-12 team and hasn’t won a SB yet, he is also 25 so trading for him isn’t a win-now move and he knows it. IF we trade for a QB, I’d prefer it’d be Watson. It’s nothing against Wilson, he is an elite QB and will never be forgotten but Watson puts us in a better scenario. Lastly, Adam Schefter reported that: “Seahawks’ QB Russell Wilson has not demanded a trade, his agent Mark Rodgers told ESPN. Wilson has told the Seahawks he wants to play in Seattle but, if a trade were considered, the only teams he would go to are the Cowboys, Saints, Raiders, Bears.” This may kill our chances of even possibly getting into trade talks but he went on The Michael Kay Show and said this on the matter: To Paraphrase: “Just because they’re not in his top 4, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t waive his no trade clause if the Jets gave the best offer” Another thing to keep in mind is that his wife, Ciara, is a singer, songwriter, dancer, and model. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind the NY Market.
All-Pro Center on Free Agency
Onto a very underrated news headline, Corey Linsley is set to hit Free Agency. If you read my article on Possible Offensive Line Options for the New York Jets heading into the 2021 Free Agency, you’ll know how great of a season Linsley had. He had an All-Pro season at the Center position and the Jets can use as much help on the offensive line as they possibly can get. Linsley went on Sirius XM NFL Radio and said this on possibly hitting FA, “We’re not closing the door for anything…but yeah it definitley feels weird. Looks like all signs are pointing towards snapping the ball somewhere else next year.” This is significant because I was worried they’d possibly work out a deal or franchise tag him. However, it looks like they won’t and he’s open for market. Now, you may be asking why would we sign another Center when we have Connor McGovern and he’s pretty solid. Well, having an All-Pro center is always a great thing and being able to move the McGovernator to the guard position may be the best thing for us. Even if he doesn’t work out at the guard position and doesn’t look like a long-term answer then we can simply just let him go when his contract expires (next year), and then draft a rookie guard.
What’s Up, WATSON!
We’ve got a LOT to unpack here. So on Thursday, Deshaun posted another cryptic tweet that put Twitter in shambles:
He is referring loyalty to how the Texans aren’t loyal to him since they didn’t live up to their GM search promise. The Watson situation does not look like it’s going to seem better. Texans GM Nick Caserio says that Watson isn’t on the market, but teams are leaving voicemails. It is interesting that this news came out because a Twitter account named @JetsIslandIG tweeted a similar message out referring to voicemails before the news came out. He tweeted this:
This is big because he says according to his sources that, the Texans are still unwilling to trade Watson. However, the Jets have prepared an offer — and the Texans didn’t slam the phone down on them. He also included the offer in his series of tweet which I’ll include below:
I’m just giving information, I don’t know if this is true but he claims he doesn’t spread fake news. Onto confirmed reports, Dan Graziano said this:
This just keeps confirming what we know, which is Watson wants out but he doesn’t want to make this ugly. On top of all this news, Vegas is going nuts over the Jets. The Sportsbooks are seeing a jump in sharp money on the Jets to win the division, the AFC and even the Super Bowl due to the Deshaun Watson rumors. So, does someone know something? I wonder why the spike of bets went up on the Jets. Hmmm, we’ll just have to wait and see.
