Welcome to part four. As you know the NY Jets has parted ways with Adam Gase, the head coaching job is now officially vacant. The Jets have a laundry list of candidates that have been linked to the vacant job. General Manager, Joe Douglas will lead the search for a new coach. We all should fully trust Joe Douglas with anything he does. He has such a great background, comes from many successful organizations, he has been apart of the process of drafting HOFers and future HOFs and has worked under Ozzie Newsome, Ryan Pace, and Howie Roseman. They have requested multiple coordinators for interviews, and in this series I will do profiles and my personal thoughts on these coordinators and coaches linked to the NYJ open spot. My rating will be based off of these four categories: Experience, Reputation/Actual Talent, CEO, and Celebrity status. Let’s start with Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy.

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy:

Eric Bieniemy is a 51 years old man from New Orleans, Louisiana. He started his football career as a player. He played for Bishop Amat High School and highly recruited. He committed to the University of Colorado Boulder. He was actually a Heisman finalist in his time there, he also their all-time rushing leader. He was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft and played in the league. After the league, he went back to his alma mater to coach from 2001-02 as their RB coach. Afterwards, he went to UCLA to be their RB coach from 2003-05. Then he was given his first gig in the NFL (as a coach) for the Minnesota Vikings. He coached the RB’s and he helped Adrian Peterson develop. He was the RB coach from 2006-10, and became a assistant HC in 2010. Afterwards, he returned to his alma mater as the OC from 2011-12. When his time at Colorado was up, he knew Andy Reid from Philadelphia, since he played for him and joined the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-17 as their RB Coach. When Matt Nagy became the Bears HC, the OC job was up for grabs in 2018 and Bieniemy took it. In 2018, the Chiefs had the 1st ranked offense (the best), went 12-4 and went to the AFC Championship game. Then, in 2019 they had the 5th ranked offense (elite), with a 12-4 record, and won the SB. Now, in 2020 they had the 6th ranked offense and have went 14-2 this year with back to back championship aspirations. He runs a west coast offensive scheme.

Personal thoughts: I would absolutely love this hire. EB has been a top coaching candidate for two years now, the only reason he’s not a 40/40 hire is because there is obviously some concern about play calling. Can he do it week in, week out? I think he can, because he was given the play call duties in the playoffs last year and the Chiefs did absolutely fantastic! It’s a little disappointing to hear him get so much criticism about this and nobody said this about Pederson and Nagy. EB is respected across the league on all cylinders, he helped create the project that is Mahomes, he was Adrian Peterson’s RB coach and he has experience from college and the NFL. Let’s not forget, Andy Reid’s coaching tree is one of the greatest trees that stands till’ this day. That tree includes John Harbaugh, Ron Rivera, Doug Pederson, Matt Nagy, Sean McDermott, Todd Bowles and many more. EB has proven himself to every team in the league that he deserves a HC gig. He is also a very well respected by not only his peers but his players as well. My only main concerns is his ability make sure the defense is calling good plays.

Ravens OC Greg Roman:

Greg Roman is a 48 year old man from Atlantic City, New Jersey (Interesting). He started his football journey in HS when he played for the Holy Spirit Spartans. Then he played college ball for the John Carroll Blue Streaks. After college, Roman went to coaching. His first job sent him straight into the NFL as the offensive line assistant from the Carolina Panthers (1995-01), then he joined Houston as their TE and QB coach (2002-05). Then he began his first stint with the Baltimore Ravens as their offensive line assistant (2006-07), Jets GM Joe Douglas was in Baltimore from 2000-14 (interesting). Then, he left the NFL for his first OC gig with his HS in 2008. Afterwards, he went to Stanford (2009-10) as their TE and OT coach. He made his return to the NFL by becoming the 49ers offensive coordinator (2011-14) and helped coach Colin Kaepernick. The Niners made it to the Super Bowl in 2013 and faced Roman’s former team (Ravens), and lost. He joined the Bills (2005-16) as their OC and returned to Baltimore the following year as their TE coach and senior offensive assistant. He was boosted up to assistant head coach and tight ends coach the following year. Then, he became their OC in 2019. In his first year, he coached Lamar Jackson to be the NFL MVP and the Ravens had the 1st (the best) ranked offense in the league. In 2020, he had a slow year and the Ravens had the 7th (great) ranked offense but Lamar did not looked as polished as the year before. He runs a West Coast offense.

Personal thoughts: I would be against this hire. There are so many other great candidates on the board and they go with Roman? The Ravens struggled heavily this year. If he decides to carry this wildcat offense to New York instead of a full on west coast offense, I’d be worried. I don’t know if anyone has noticed but the wildcat offense doesn’t work as effectively in the post season. The Ravens are yet to make a AFC Championship game, and they haven’t won a playoff game yet. Roman has good experience in the NFL and in college, after he left SF they started to deteriorate. However, I’m not a huge fan of the Baltimore offense. He is some sort of a recognized celebrity name and I don’t think he’s as big of a CEO as the other candidates are. My worry is that, he knows Joe Douglas. They both worked in Baltimore in 2006-07. Roman was the offensive line assistant and Joe Douglas was a scout. Douglas is known for his ability to get good OL, so they must’ve worked together at least once. I wouldn’t like this hire because there are better candidates, that’s my opinion.
