Welcome to part two. As you know the NY Jets has parted ways with Adam Gase, the head coaching job is now officially vacant. The Jets have a laundry list of candidates that have been linked to the vacant job. General Manager, Joe Douglas will lead the search for a new coach. We all should fully trust Joe Douglas with anything he does. He has such a great background, comes from many successful organizations, he has been apart of the process of drafting HOFers and future HOFs and has worked under Ozzie Newsome, Ryan Pace, and Howie Roseman. They have requested multiple coordinators for interviews, and in this series I will do profiles and my personal thoughts on these coordinators and coaches linked to the NYJ open spot. My rating will be based off of these four categories: Experience, Reputation/Actual Talent, CEO, and Celebrity status. Let’s start with Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator, Joe Brady.

Panthers OC Joe Brady:

Joe Brady is a 31 year old man from Miami Lakes, Florida. He started his football career in High School, he was a wide receiver for Everglades High School. He put up 21 receptions, 419 yards, and 3 TDs in his senior year. He later then played for Williams & Mary Tribe as a WR in college, he was on the CAA Academic All-Conference team for two years. After college, he began coaching at the same school when he was 24 years old. He surprisingly began as a linebackers coach from 2013-14, the team finished 7-5 in both those years. He then joined Penn State as a Graduate assistant in 2015-16, the team finished 7-6 in his first year. Then had an incredible 11-3 record and won the Big Ten championship, in his second year. Afterwards, he joined Sean Payton’s New Orlean Saints in 2017-18 as a offensive assistant. They finished 11-5 in his first year and went to the divisional round until Case Keenum and Stefon Diggs pulled off the Minneapolis Miracle. They were ranked 2nd in league offense. In year two, they went 13-3 and made it to the NFC Championship Game, would’ve made it to the SB but there was a controversial play that went in favor of the LA Rams. They ranked 8th in league offense. After, his two year skid he made it to LSU and was the passing game coordinator and the WR coach. This is when everyone started to learn Joe Brady’s name because that year was the one of the greatest years in LSU football history. He was apart of making Joe Burrow, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Justin Jefferson, and Jamarr Chase the studs they are today. He won the Broyles Award (Best assistant coach in CFB) and that year LSU won the CFP National Championship. After coaching his rear end off in LSU, he joined Matt Rhule to be Carolina’s offensive coordinator in 2020. His offense was ranked 24th ranked league offense (not great), to be fair they missed Christian McCaffrey for nearly the entire year. They were 20th in yards (decent), 17th in passing yards (nice) and ranked 21st in rushing yards (decent). He runs a spread concept based offense.

Personal Thoughts: I like Joe Brady, I really do. However, he is only 31 and still has to gain more experience. He could lose the locker room very quickly due to his age and the way he may command his players to play or act like. He didn’t have the best time in Carolina but I personally wouldn’t hire him. He’s very talented, but I’m not too sure if he’s a CEO. I still believe he’s a little unproven due to the lack of experience and the way his offense played this year. He should continue to develop and become experienced like Patrick Graham is doing currently with the Giants, and what Brandon Staley should do with the Rams. I wouldn’t be all excited or mad with this hire, I think it’s too early for Brady. I will say two or three years from now, he will be a top coaching candidate if he’s available.

Bills’ OC Brian Daboll:

Brian Daboll is a 45 year old man from Welland, Ontario, Canada. He started his football experience/career in High School playing at Saint Francis HS. For college, he attended the University of Rochester and started for two years. After his time in college, he was hired for The College of William & Mary in 1997 and served as the Restrictive earnings coach. After wards, he joined Michigan State as their graduate assistant from 1998-99. They finished 6-6 and 10-2 winning the Florida Citrus Bowl. He was then jumped into the NFL and was the defensive coaching assistant from 2000-01. They finished 5-11 and 11-5 with a SB championship in those two years. He went from being a defensive coaching assistant to the WR coach for 2002-06. In that five year span they won two Super Bowls and went to three AFC Championship games. After his tenure in New England he joined Eric Mangini to work for the New York Jets as the QBs coach. They went 4-12 and 9-7 in those two season. After Mangini went to Cleveland, Daboll followed as the OC and they went 5-11 twice. After his time following Mangini, he went to Miami as their OC and they went 6-10 in 2011. He went to KC as their OC in 2012, and they went 2-14. He re-joined the New England Patriots as their offensive assistant in 2013 and they went 12-4 and lost in the AFC Championship game. He stayed from 2014-16 to be their TE coach, they won two SBs in that three year span. He went back to college football and joined Nick Saban’s Alabama squad in 2017 as the co-OC and QBs coach. They made the ultimate comeback versus Georgia that year to win the CFP National Championship. He went back to the NFL in 2018 and joined the Bills as their OC to help Josh Allen develop and he did exactly that. They went 6-10 in year one, then went 10-6 and made the playoffs, then finally this year they went 13-3 with an explosive offense and have championship aspirations. His offense was ranked 2nd in league offense (elite), 2nd in yards (elite), 3rd in passing yards (elite) and ranked 20th in rushing yards (decent).

Personal Thoughts: I wouldn’t exactly look at this hire and say it is one of the best hire’s we’ve made in decades, like how other people saying it would be. However, it would be a very impressive hire and I certainly wouldn’t be aggravated about it. Maybe a little disappointed because there are better head coaches available on the board but Daboll would be a grade A hire on my board. He’s made Josh Allen grow into a MVP candidate. After his time in Alabama, he’s had lots of success in Buffalo. He looks like a knowledgable coach on both sides of the ball, he spent sometime working on defense. My only issue is that he is connected to spyware, big time. I don’t if he still practices the technics of what New England did during the spyware era, or if his time with the scandal will ruin any future events. Besides that, I’m impressed and wouldn’t mind the hire.
