During the last day of the trade deadline, the team mostly rumored for every player was the New York Yankees. However, they never make a big trade. This year the big pitchers on the block were Mike Clevinger and Lance Lynn.

Mike Clevinger Trade Breakdown:

Clevinger was traded yesterday to the Padres in exchange for RHP Cal Quantrill, LF Josh Naylor, C Austin Hedges, SS Gabriel Arias, LHP Joey Cantillo, SS Owen Miller. That’s a considerable haul. Clevinger has a 3.18 ERA, 1-1 record, 20 hits, 21 strikeouts, with 22.2 IP. I’m glad our Yankees didn’t make this trade, now this trade seems excellent for the Padres. However, in 4-5 years from now, this won’t be considered to be precisely a great trade—so many prospects for a 29-year-old pitcher who’ll be a free agent in 2023.

Why We Don’t Need Lance Lynn:

The Yankee pitching rotation is better than people think. We have our $324 Million Dollar Ace already (Gerrit Cole), James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, Jordan Montgomery, Deivi Garcia, and Clarke Schmidt on the rise. If we trade for Lynn like we already did in 2018, where does he fit on this team a year or two from now? I don’t see it. By then, we’d hope the rotation would look like Cole, Severino, (Paxton or Tanaka, both due to be Free Agents), Montgomery, Garcia, and Schmidt. I don’t see where Lynn fits here without cutting time away from Monty, Garcia, and Schmidt. On top of all that, we’d need to trade some prospects. This would’ve been Lynn’s second stint if he was traded here, and his first wasn’t so great. He had a 4.14 ERA, 3-2 record, 11 Games Started, 54.1 IP, and 61 Ks in the regular season. In the Postseason, ALDS, he pitched in two games. He was a reliable reliever in his first game, with 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 Ks, and 1 BB. Then, in his second game, when we needed him most, he choked big time. Severino started with an awful performance giving up six runs, and then in 3rd inning, they put in Lynn. He had no runners on at all. Then Lynn pitches 0.1 innings; four batters faced, 2 H, 1 BB, and 3 ER! He didn’t even finish the game. We were already down six after he came in; the lead was extended to 9. A comeback would’ve been easier if it was only six runs. Just some guys can’t pitch in New York, and Lynn was one of those guys. Many like to bring up excuses like Larry Rothschild wasn’t the best pitching coach for him, but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that he choked when we needed him the most, and now fans wanted us to trade for him. Cashman made a good move, which was keeping all of our prospects.

Big Trade Deadline Trades:

Yesterday was a massive trade deadline. So, many guys were moved, and it was insane. Here is the list of players that were traded:

• The Cleveland Indians traded RHP Mike Clevinger to the Padres in exchange for RHP Cal Quantrill, LF Josh Naylor, C Austin Hedges, SS Gabriel Arias, LHP Joey Cantillo, SS Owen Miller. 
• The Texas Rangers traded LHP Mike Minor and cash considerations to the A’s for international slot money and two players to be named later
• The Arizona Diamondbacks traded LHP Robbie Ray to the Blue Jays in exchange for Travis Bergen and cash
• The Arizona Diamondbacks trade R Sterling Marte to the Marlins for LHP Caleb Smith, RHP Humberto Mejia, and LHP Julio Frias.
• The Miami Marlins traded Jonathan Villar to the Blue Jays for L Griffin Conine
• Cubs traded for relieving pitchers, Andrew Chafin and Josh Osich
• The Milwaukee Brewers trade RHP David Phelps to the Phillies
• The Arizona Diamondbacks trade RHP Archie Bradley and cash to the Reds for IF Josh VanMeter and OF Stuart Fairchild
• The Angels trade OF Brian Goodwin to the Reds for LHP Packy Naughton and a player to be named later.
• The Tigers have traded OF Cameron Maybin to the Cubs for INF Zack Short
• Rangers trade 3B Todd Frazier and C Robinson Chirinos to the Mets for players to be named later
• The Orioles trade relieving pitcher Miguel Castro to the Mets for LHP Kevin Smith an a player to be named later.
• The Red Sox trade OF Kevin Pillar to Rockies for a player to be named later and International slot money
• The Dodgers trade RHP Ross Stripling to the Blue Jays for RHP Kendall Williams and another player to be named later
