The Yankees and Nationals concluded their three game series on Sunday with a 3-2 Yankees win, primarily because of young Shortstop Gleyber Torres. Torres went 3 for 4, collecting his first three hits of the season. Torres drove in two of the Yankees’ three runs (the other was a solo shot from Luke Voit), and had a game-changing Homer, which took Nats’ Starting Pitcher, Patrick Corbin, out of the game. Getting Corbin out of the game was huge, as he was previously shutting the Yankees’ potent lineup out, allowing just two hits (including the Torres HR), and striking out 8 in 6.1 IP.
Despite the win, there was a lot of individual Yankee performances that were subpar.
The Good:
Besides Gleyber Torres breaking through with a huge game, there is another positive to this Yankee win: the bullpen is just as good. Aaron Boone opted to go with a bullpen day, using Jonathan Loaisiga as an opener. Loaisiga went 3 innings (around 50 PC), and showed some good stuff. He allowed just one run (a HR to Trea Turner), and displayed a high 90s fastball. From there, David Hale, Adam Ottavino, Chad Green, Tommy Kahnle and Zack Britton all took the mound for the Yankees, each pitching 1 inning, except for Chad Green, who pitched 2 innings. Only one run was allowed by the 5 relievers over 6 innings of play. Tommy Kahnle was especially impressive, as he worked himself out of a jam, striking out two Nationals with two runners in scoring position. Additionally, Zack Britton (filling in for Aroldis Chapman as he recovers from COVID) was awarded a save after pitching a scoreless 9th inning.
The Bad:
Despite his great offensive game, Gleyber Torres was sloppy in the field, committing an error in the 9th inning that put the tying run on base with no outs. Additionally, much of the Yankees’ offense were shut down by Corbin, especially Giancarlo Stanton, who struck out twice, going 0 for 3.
