The number 5 was worn by many greats throughout NY Sports History. Here are the nominees from each team:
David Wright (Mets), Joe DiMaggio (Yankees), Denis Potvin (Islanders), Dan Girardi (Rangers), Kerry Collins (Giants), Pat Leahy (Jets).
Joe DiMaggio is the best number 5 in NY Sports History. DiMaggio played his entire 13 year career with the Yankees, winning 9 World Series, while achieving the All Star honor every season he played. Joe DiMaggio’s record for 56 straight games with a hit is still an MLB record 80 years after he first set the record. Joe DiMaggio is one of the best Yankees (and Baseball players) of all time, and he is easily the best number 5 in NY Sports History.
Honorable Mention: Denis Potvin
Potvin was one of the most important pieces in the Islanders 1980s Dynasty. The defenseman was the New York Islanders Captain for all 4 cups. Potvin played his entire 15 year career with the Islanders (1,060 Games). Denis Potvin won the Norris Trophy (awarded to the NHL’s best defenseman) three times. Additionally, Denis Potvin was the first Islander to have his number retired by the team. Denis Potvin also won the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the best Rookie in the NHL.
