On February 22, 2011, 7-year-old me picked up the Daily News, casually flipped to the back of the paper and read in big bold letters, “HELLO MELO”. At this point, I didn’t know much about basketball and I had always wanted to get into it; to see the whole city of New York changing because of this man was unbelievable. Carmelo changed the culture around me and I wanted to be a part of it. I searched the paper to see when the next game was: February 24, vs the Bucks.
I remember that night like it was yesterday, I turned on MSG to watch and instantly I was hooked. Carmelo had this aura about him that he still has to this day for me, he just looked like the man. The Knicks won that night 114 – 108, with Melo’s stat line being 27 points, 10 Rebounds, and 1 assist. And after that night I didn’t miss a Knicks game on purpose for the next 6 years. And you’re probably wondering how you could go from watching every Knicks game for 6 years to hating their guts, well you just have to wait and see.
The Rest of the 2010-2011 Season
The memories I have from that season were some of my favorite as a Knicks fan. Melo’s game winner vs the Grizzlies, his game winner vs the Pacers, and their win against the Heat’s 3 headed monster. I remember being so scared of LeBron that game. But my favorite moments were learning about the scrappy players that barely anyone knew. For example, Chauncey Billups, Landry Fields, Toney Douglas, Jared Jeffries, and my favorite Raymond Felton. All those guys were like my first friends because at the time I didn’t have any friends and I felt like I was part of their family. Carmelo was like the father I never had, I know that sounds weird because he doesn’t even know I exist. But Melo is probably the main reason I’m still here today and eventually would be the reason I don’t support the Knicks anymore.
